Its Festival Season!

There’s nothing we like more than a music festival.  So many bands in one place, great Arizona weather, amazing atmosphere.  The idea for Beneath a Desert Sky, as its name implies, was born at a festival – Pot of Gold 2015.  So here’s a run-down of some of the Spring 2016 festivals coming our way:

March 11-13 – McDowell Mountain Music Festival (M3F) 2016 – A great 2016 lineup kicks off festival season that includes

  • March 11 – Beck, Animal Collective, Big Wild, MS MR
  • March 12 – Kid Cudi, Bloc Party, Goldfish, GRiZ, The Main Squeeze, M!NT
  • March 13 – Gary Clark Jr., The Avett Brothers, Bird Dog, Firekid, Kaleo and The Oh Hellos

The line-up also includes more than 15 local bands.  This full weekend event is an amazing start to Phoenix’s festival season. More information at

March 12 – Viva Phoenix.  This is a one-night extravaganza.  15 venues around downtown phoenix including Crescent Ballroom, City Scape, Valley Bar, the Monarch Theatre and Last Exit Live.  National Acts include Crystal Castles, The Growlers, Neon Indian, Rockert from the Crypt, Biz Markie and a whole bunch more.  All the local bands not playing at M3F are playing here including Phoenix Afrobeat Orchestra, Playboy Manbaby, Dry River Yacth Club and Harrison Fjord. March 17 and 19 – Pot of Gold Music Festival 2016.  Relocating from Tempe Beach Park to Rawhide in Chandler.  Last year’s festival had a broad selection of acts while this years line-up is much more tightly focused and includes:

  • March 17 – Future, Slightly Stoopid, Atmosphere, Dirty Heads and Fishbone
  • March 19 – 311, Big Sean, Rebelution, Rae Sremmurd, Earl Sweatshirt, Protoje, Katastro and Mouse Powell

March 19 – UFEST 2016.  A 1-day festival hosted by KUPD at Ak Chin Pavilion featuring Disturbed, P.O.D., Atreyu and Wolf Mother (who recently had to cancel a headline show at the Marquee).

April 6 – 10 – Arizona Bike Week.  While not technically a music festival, Arizona Bike Week definitely should not be overlooked when it comes to music.  The headline stage has headline acts all week long and includes:

  • April 6 – Blackberry Smoke; Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (see her in an intimate environment before her August show at Ak Chin Pavilion with Heart and Cheap Trick)
  • April 7 – Warrant; Blues Traveler
  • April 8 – Reverend Horton Heat; Social Distortion
  • April 9 – Ratt; Buckcherry

April 23 – FestivALT. Also with a relocation from Mesa to downtown Phoenix.  Information is just beginning to be released, but as of press time JR JR and Nate Ruess are currently announced for the line-up with more expected soon. More information at

May 13-15 – FORM Acrosanti.  A 3-day festival celebrating its 3rd anniversary in 2016.  Tickets are “free-by-application.”  Organizers anticipate, “a diverse community of creators…empowered to participate in FORM without financial barriers.  Instead, participants are invited for their cretiviety, thoughtfulness, and intention.  The program includes performances, discussions, workshops, installations, technologies and activities.”  Announced acts include Skrillex, Bonobo (DJ), Four Tet, Tortoise, Thundercat, Perfume Genius, Bill Callahan and Saul Williams with an additional 23 announced bands over the 3 days.  More information at
