The dog days of summer are upon us and what appeared to have been shaping up as a nice monsoon season has completely fizzled out. Bright blue skies and an unrelenting 108° seems to be the order of the day. Hot also describes the artists appearing the Valley this week as three of them are currently sitting in the Billboard Pop top 20 right now.
Shawn Mendes @ Comerica Theatre on 7.22
17-year-old Shawn Mendes is killing it right now. Mendes was one of the first artists to not only draw a tremendous following using social media – in his case Vine – but really, truly capitalize on it with a record deal, top 10 single and hit album. Oh yeah, he also co-opened for Taylor Swift at a number of her shows on her 1989 tour. And now he’s headlining his own tour and his song Treat You Better is sitting at 15 on the Billboard Pop Chart. Did we mention that he’s just 17? Catch him now at Comerica because his next stop in the Valley may well be at an arena like Talking Stick Arena or Gila River Arena.
Rob Zombie & Korn @ Ak-Chin Pavilion on 7/23
Either of these artists could (and should) be a headliner. Getting to see them both on the same bill is just a bonus. It’s like getting two shows in one. Rob Zombie is touring in support of his most recent album The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser which was released April 29, 2016. Korn doesn’t have a recent release, but with 11 studio albums the band certainly has more than enough material to draw from.
Meghan Trainor @ Comerica Theatre on 7/24
This must be the week of child prodigies because Meghan Trainor certainly qualifies. Trainor wrote, recorded and produced three full length albums independently before she turned 18. Her major labor debut produced three top 10 hits – All About That Bass, Lips Are Movin and Like I’m Gonna Lose You. The lead single from her second major labor album, Thank You, peaked at number 3. With four top 10 hits off her first two major label albums, all within 18 months, Trainor is certainly doing something right. And rumor has it that she puts on a super fun, high-energy show to boot.
Twenty One Pilots @ Talking Stick Arena on 7/26
Powerhouse duo Twenty One Pilots hits the Talking Stick Resort Arena in support of their sophomore major-label release, Blurryface. Twenty One Pilots hip-hop infused rock is all over the radio right now with Ride and Stressed Out at numbers 1 and 3, respectively, on Billboard’s Hot Rock Songs Chart. If we had to guess, we’d guess that Twenty One Pilots is going to continue to place songs at the top of the various charts for a long time to come.
Fitz and the Tantrums @ Marquee Theatre on 7/27
This week closes with Fitz and the Tantrums who are touring in support of their third album which was just recently released on June 10, 2016. The band describes it music as “soul-influenced indie pop.” The band has racked up considerable critical acclaim since its inception in 2008 and tours heavily to very well received live shows.
