It’s a Saturday night in Phoenix and as I drove into the AK-Chin Pavilion parking lot it was still over 105 degrees. The first band was already playing and the line to get in was still over half way around the pavilion. There were 2 lead-up bands prior to the main acts, so the people in line had time to get in. This evening, July 23rd, we were all here to see the double headlining acts of Rob Zombie and Korn on their Return Of The Dreads Tour 2016.
This is the first time I saw a Rob Zombie show. His heavy metal and shock rock show reminded me a lot of the early years of Alice Cooper. They started out with Dead City Radio, with Rob pouring his heart out and dancing around on the raised stage. Rob was joined by Piggy D. on bass, John 5 on guitar and Ginger Fish on drums.
Korn came back to the valley and this time they were playing on a large outside stage. With the larger stage, they were able to use a larger drum kit, large background sets and had more room for everyone to move around. Lead singer and frontman, Jonathan Davis came out and used his H. R. Giger’s Alien inspired mic stand. Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu (bass) danced all over the stage while laying down the bass track. Both James”Munky” Shaffer and Brian “Head” Welch laid down the band’s signature guitar riffs. Ray Luzier played his drum kit like a man processed.
