Slipknot & Marilyn Manson at Ak-Chin Pavilion

Slipknot & Marilyn Manson Crowd

On Saturday night, the greater Phoenix area experienced a major monsoon storm.  At the same time, the metal heads were finally getting to see 2 of their favorite bands, Marilyn Manson and Slipknot.  At one point during the show, right after the first band, Of Mice and Men, completed their set, it looked like the rest of the show might have to be cancelled due to wind, heavy rain and a major lightning storm.  Since the show was outside at AK-Chin Pavilion, the wind and rain were ok, but the lightning was the real concern.  So the ushers and security made a lot of the uncovered fans move to safer areas until the lightning was over.  Originally the concert was schedule for June, but had to be rescheduled to August due to Corey Taylor’s, lead singer for Slipknot, recovery from spinal surgery.  Now the fans were concerned that the rest of the show would have to be rescheduled again.  Luckily the storm blew through and an hour later, the audience was let back into the grass area and the concert continued.

Marilyn Manson

Once the concert continued, a curtain covered the stage and Marilyn Manson and the band were silhouetted on the curtain by the stage lights.  The curtain dropped, and the stage was engulfed in stage smoke as the band played Angel with the Scabbed Wings.  Much to the fans delight, Manson delivered a powerful set of songs from his first certified platinum album, Antichrist Superstar, to his newest album, The Pale Emperor.  For me, they had two outstanding stage performances.  The first was Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) where Marilyn came out on stage in 3 foot tall stilts and walked around the stage and sang.  The other was when he did Antichrist Superstar, where he stood behind a podium bearing a lightning bolt symbol and sang.  The following musicians are currently backing Marilyn on this tour: Twiggy Ramirez (Bass), Paul Wiley (Guitar), Tyler Bates (Guitar) Daniel Fox (Keyboards) and Gil Sharone (Drums).  If you are into Marilyn Manson’s music, and the crowd really was, then this is a must see show for you.

Corey Taylor

After about 30 minutes to reset the stage, a new curtain was draped in front of the stage.  The members of Slipknot entered the stage, and started to play, the curtain dropped and the crowd went crazy.  Slipknot members perform wearing unique individual facemasks and matching uniforms.  Originally each band member was known by a number, 0 to 8, but after the death of Paul Gray, they stopped assigning number to new members.  Current Slipknot members are Shawn “Clown” Crahan (#6) (Custom Percussion), Craig “133” Jones (#5) (Keyboards), Mick Thomson (#7) (Guitar), Corey Taylor (#8) (Lead Vocals), Sid Wilson (#0) (Keyboards), Chris Fehn (#3) (custom percussion), Jim Root (#4) (Guitar), Jay Weinberg (Drums), Alessandro Venturella (Bass).  Corey Taylor, their front man and lead singer, was all over the stage, but due to his recent neck surgery, he was not doing his normal head banging.  Both Shawn “Clown” Crahan and Chris Fehn were on the right and left of the stage on hydraulic drum risers.  Their drum sets would rise and fall and spin.  At one point Shawn had one of the beer kegs fall off the set, and he got so upset that he just threw his drum sticks and walked off the set until the keg was replaced.  Their 17 song set was a great mix made up of songs across their entire catalog.  The band put on an amazing concert and the crowd really enjoyed it, even after the last encore song, the fans wanted more.  This was my first Slipknot show and I really enjoyed it and thought the stage performance by the members was outstanding.
