George Thorogood And The Destroyers Rock Party at Talking Stick Resort Grand Ballroom

George Thorogood

The greater Phoenix area had an amazing evening of Rock & Roll on Saturday March 4th.  There were a number of great bands that rolled into the valley.  I and a full house of fans got to see a 70s Rock and Roll icon, George Thorogood And The Destroyers.  I saw George Thorogood And The Destroyers back in the early 80s with the Rolling Stones at ASU Sun Devil Stadium.  I have got to admit that this show was just as energetic and fun.  George and the band were at the top of their game and we got a great rock & roll show.  They played all of their greatest hits much to the delight of all of their fans.

George Thorogood And The Destroyers

They started the show with the 2006 high-energy boogie-blues song “Rock Party”.  George strutted around the stage and at times played side-by-side with the other guitarist, the bassist and sax player.  He was constantly playing to the crowd including the people standing on the side of the stage.  George grew up watching the great bands of the 60s.  His idols were Keith Richards and Mick Jagger.  In a way, George attempts to take on the persona of both.  He plays guitar like Keith and has the dynamic stage presence of Mick.

George Thorogood and Jim Suhler

They moved on to the Bo Diddley classic, “Who Do You Love?”.  A few songs later the crowd started singing along with the band’s classic, “One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer”.  Afterwards the audience gave the band one of their many standing ovations.  George dedicated the song, “Gear Jammer” for all of the truckers in the crowd.  During the song he did a guitar solo with his white “Cobra” hollow body Les Paul.  George left the stage for a short break and the band started playing “Tail Dragger”.  He came back on stage after couple of minutes to sing lead for the song.  There are some songs that you know from the very first riffs.  So when George and the band started their last song of the main set, everyone knew from the very first riffs exactly what the song was, the band’s biggest hit, “Bad To The Bone”.  Everyone was on their feet shouting and singing along.

Buddy Leach and George Thorogood

For the encore, George came out and started by introducing the band.  The current band line-up consists of George Thorogood (lead vocals, lead and slide guitar), Bill Blough (bass), Buddy Leach (saxophones and keyboards), Jeff Simon (drums) and Jim Suhler (rhythm and lead guitar).  They ended the show with the blues classic, “Madison Blues”.  As with most blues songs, it became a jam session where each of the band members got to do a mini solo.  After the band left and the lights came on, George came back on stage and started shaking hands with the people left in the venue.  This was just a fun show of great classic rock and roll music.
