Unbelievable. That’s the only word to describe a legendary artist still performing into his ‘90s. That’s the only word to describe Tony Bennett who will be appearing at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix on July 11.
Bennett turned 90 on August 3, 2017. His current tour takes him throughout the Italy, France, Spain and England, where he’ll be performing a week before his show at the Celebrity Theatre. The tour follows a highly rated two-hour special on NBC celebrating his 90th birthday that aired in December 2016. The NBC special was filmed at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, was hosted by Alec Baldwin and included performances from Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Billy Joel, Elton John, Madonna, Stevie Wonder and, of course, Tony Bennett himself.
According to the Tampa Bay Times’ review of his March 1, 2017 show, “Bennett’s voice was front and center all night, with his band often playing so softly, so sparsely, you could almost hear the air between the notes. A lesser singer of any age might shy from such silences, fearing the exposure they bring. Bennett met the challenge head on, lending tender intimacy to the gentle But Beautiful and the first song he ever recorded, The Boulevard of Broken Dreams. The Shadow of Your Smile got a breezy bossa nova makeover, and Bennett delivered a little soft-shoe to boot, but it still maintained its wistful beauty.”
