C3 Presents has announced that the first-ever Innings Festival is coming March 23-25, 2018 to Tempe Beach Park & Arts Park in Tempe, AZ. The three-day event will feature performances from 36 artists on three stages, culinary demos, food vendors, fun family activities and, because it’s during Spring Training, it would be incomplete without appearances by professional baseball players.
C3 Presents is the same organization that produces Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits Music Festival. With their deep background in music festivals, we can be assured that they’ll be able to attract top artists to perform at the Festival and put on a world-class event. And since they’re from Chicago, they’re already marketing it to the Cubs fans that swarm the Valley during Spring Training.
The lineup, ticket pricing, and packages have not yet been announced.
Phoenix Hits the National Map
The Phoenix area has been home to terrific locally grown music festivals. McDowell Mountain Music Festival, Pot of Gold Music Festival, and Viva Phoenix are all fantastic locally-produced spring music festivals in the Phoenix area.
Lost Lake Music Festival is launching its inaugural festival at Steel Indian School Park this month. Lost Lake is produced by Superfly, a national festival producer headquartered in New York City that produces Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN and Outside Lands in San Francisco, CA as well as numerous corporate events for national companies.
C3 Presents is headquartered in Austin, TX and cut its teeth taking Lollapalooza from a local music festival in Chicago to an international globe-crossing phenomenon. They also run the Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta and the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience in New Orleans as well as other public and corporate events.
The introduction of Superfly and C3 Productions into the Phoenix market is a milestone that suggests a true maturation of Phoenix as a music destination. The Valley’s beautiful spring and fall should allow organizers to schedule festivals earlier and later, respectively, than festivals in the rest of the country which should mean that top artists who aren’t otherwise on tour should have fewer conflicts and be more available. Quite frankly, it’s surprising that we didn’t see national festival organizers enter this market sooner.
Impact on Local Organizers
While it’s exciting to have national festival organizers enter the Phoenix market, the concern it presents is the impact it will have on the local festival organizers.
- McDowell Mountain Music Festival is scheduled for March 2-4, 2018
- Pot of Gold Music Festival is scheduled for March 16-18, 2018
- Innings Festival is scheduled for March 23-25, 2018
- Viva Phoenix is usually in March but hasn’t announced its 2018 dates yet.
McDowell Mountain Music Festival has been a steady presence in this community for 13 years and, as a non-profit, has donated a significant amount of money to local charities. Pot of Gold Music Festival hasn’t been around as long, but has certainly made a name for itself in Phoenix. We all hope that there are plenty of music fans to support all 3 of these large festivals and fans will come out to support live music in Phoenix. Innings Festival, with its appeal to spring training fans visiting from other parts of the country, will hopefully broaden the base of attending fans as opposed to cannibalizing attendance from already existing local festivals.
Regardless of how it all plays out, though, Phoenix will certainly be the most exciting music destination in the country in March 2018 with 3 (likely 4) amazing festivals on the calendar.
