GWAR spraying crowd

The original Scumdogs came back to Tempe to the Marquee Theater to entertain and recruit new members to the Scumdog ranks.  GWAR is a collection of misfits that were sent to planet Earth by the Master because they were just to big of fuckups.  These Scumdogs helped populate planet Earth, but realized that they screwed up and created politicians, religion and corporations.  Realizing their mistake, their new mission is to correct their screwups.  You can read the full story here: .

GWAR is one of those bands that you either love or hate.  Personally, I like the band.  They put on a great stage show, admittedly a little gruesome, but no worse than a lot of haunted houses or horror movies.  They are a pretty good as a band.  Both BälSäc the Jaws ‘o Death and Pustulus Maximus are really good guitarists and Beefcake The Mighty is just great on bass.  The Berserker Blöthar has a lot to live up to replacing Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) who died just a couple years ago.  The Berserker Blöthar does a great job both howling out the lyrics and performing the different skits with follow Scumdog, Bonesnapper.  Hidden in the drum kit is JiZMak da Gusha pound out the beat for all of the songs.

Terrorists loose their heads and spray crowd at GWAR concert

The show starts with 2 terrorists in white lab coats and guns walking on stage.  Then the band enters with Bonesnapper and The Berserker Blöthar with his sword and shield confront the terrorists.  As the band is playing “War on GWAR”, Bonesnapper and The Berserker Blöthar fight the terrorists and finally cut off their heads.  Thus, starts the multiple times that the crowd is sprayed with fake blood.  We, the photographers in the pit were told the blood would not flow until the 3rd song, so to say the least, we got hit.  Luckily, I had my camera and lens in a plastic bag (I had been at prior GWAR shows).

I don’t want to give away the show details, but they had skits with a priest, Trump, a couple of kids and some strange clown thing.  New this time for me was the introduction of their nemesis, Sawborg Destructo.  Again, numerous times fake blood and green goo was sprayed on the crowd.

Sleezy P. Martini, GWAR Manager video

They had 2 video screens on stage that were used to display different videos.  These included comments and introductions by their manager, Sleezy P. Martini.  They also played a video from “Glomco” the business that is destroying the Earth, just because they could.

For the most part the mosh pit closed down and everyone pushed to the front just to experience the mayhem that is GWAR.  The band played for about 90 minutes with the main set ending what seemed to be the crowd’s favorite song, “Fuck This Place”.  The audience went nuts, jumping and singing along with the band.  After a short break, the band came back for a 2-song encore of “Phantom Limb” and “Sick Of You”.

GWAR fans after the show

I talked to a number of people in the front on the barricade and a few had never seen GWAR before including one lady.  I told them that they were screwed and were going to get covered in fake blood.  After the show I saw a number of people that were completely coated and loved it.  Personally, I changed my shirt and covered my car seat with a towel before driving home.  If you go to a GWAR show be prepared to get sprayed.  Bring along a towel and extra shirt.

Hatebreed Banner

Hatebreed is an Metalcore band from Connecticut that has been around for the last 24 years.  Their current line-up consists of Jamey Jasta as lead singer, Chris Beattie as bass player, Matt Byrne as drummer, Frank Novinec and Wayne Lozinak as guitarists.  They played for about 1 hour and drove the crowd crazy.  Multiple people were crowd surfing and a large mosh pit opened up in the middle of the floor.

The one thing that got me about the performance was when Jamey stopped the show because 2 idiots started fighting in the mosh pit.  Jamey actually called out the 2 and told them that they should take it outside, that the mosh pit was not a place for fighting.  The only other time I saw this was at a Iron Maiden show where Bruce did the same thing.  Kudos to Jamey and the band for not allowing this stupidity to continue and calling out the numbskulls.

Sorry about the photos, but the band did not use any of the frontal lighting that would have given me better photos.  When I was at the back of the venue by the soundboard I could not even see the faces of the band members.  Personally, if the band wants to push their brand, they really need to light themselves up so the audience can see them.

Miss May I

Levi Benton, lead singer for Miss May I

Miss May I is a metalcore, Thrash metal band from Troy, Ohio.  The current members of the band are Levi Benton as lead singer, Ryan Neff as bass player and singer, Jerod Boyd as drummer, Justin Aufdemkampe and BJ Stead as guitarists. I was really surprised by how good these guys were.  The crowd responded, fist pumping and even had a good mash pit going.  One of the strangest things I saw was a woman that was doing cartwheels in the mosh pit.
