Bad Company at Talking Stick Resort – Pool

It was a very strange night at Talking Stick Resort here in Scottsdale, Arizona.  We were all out at the pool waiting for the main event, Bad Company.  In most years we would be sweating from the excessive heat, but this is a strange year and the temperature this May 24th was only about 80 degrees, 15 degrees below normal.  The temperature might have been cool, but the performance by Bad Company was hotter than ever.  From the very start they came out rocking with “Can’t Get Enough”.

As normal, Paul Rodgers took over control of the stage and audience with his dynamic presence and singing.  Paul and fellow co-founder Simon Kirke on drums were joined by bass player Todd Ronning and guitarist Howard Leese.  This 4-piece group rocked the sold-out crowd for over 90 minutes giving us hit after hit.  I was also struck by just how good Paul’s voice is holding up.  Most singers of his era have issues and now have a younger band member take over the main singer responsibilities.  But Paul voice was crystal clear and very powerful and I never heard his voice crack.

Simon Kirke playing acoustic guitar for “All Because of You” during Bad Company concert

In the middle of the show, Simon Kirke came out from his drumkit and played acoustic guitar for “All Because of You” that he dedicated to the love of his life, his wife, Maria.  A couple of songs later, Howard Leese took over control and played and sang the Bob Dylan classic, “All Along The Watchtower”.  I have heard a number of artists cover this song in the past 2 months and by far this is the closest version to the phenomenal version done by Jimi Hendrix.  Howard did an exceptional job and his singing was great.  Paul told us about how he wrote the next song, “Satisfaction Guaranteed” when he was in a little band, The Firm with Jimmy Page in the mid-80s.  Then Paul came out with an acoustic guitar and started “Seagull” by himself.  At the chorus, the rest of the band joined in.

Paul Rodgers, lead singer of Bad Company

The last 2 songs of the main set were 2 of their biggest hits from the mid-70s, “Shooting Star” and their trademark song, “Bad Company”.  During each of the songs, Paul engaged with the audience and wanted us to sing along especially the chorus.  To the crowd’s credit, they did a very loud response but rarely on key.  After a short break, the band came back for an encore of “Alright Now” that Paul did prior to Bad Company when he was in the band Free.

Overall it was a very nice evening especially with the nice temperatures.  Bad Company was perfect for this outdoor venue.  As I indicated previously, it was a packed sold-out show with a lot of people in the general admission area around the pool.  I was both in the front and then back by the sound boards (just in front of General Admission area) and the sound was great.  And with the additional spot lights, the audience was able to see the band perfectly.  I would also like to credit the sound engineers; they did a great job and I never heard any feedback which at an outdoor show is amazing.  Overall it was a great show and definitely worth seeing this outstanding Rock and Roll band.

Steve Rodgers

Steve Rodgers playing Acoustic set prior to Bad Company

For tonight’s show, Paul Rodgers had his son come out as the warmup act.  Steve in his own rights is a very fine musician.  He played acoustic guitar and sang his own original songs.  He even took questions from the audience and was asked if he was related to Paul.  Steve told us jokingly that “He was Paul’s father”.  Steve also has a great voice just like his father.  Given his performance and the quality of his songs, I hope that someday he can put together a band of similar quality to Bad Company that can really show his true potential.  Good luck Steve, you are an exceptional performer and song writer.
