Following the punk movement in the 70s, came a set of new bands that were part of the British new wave movement in the late 70s. This sound was back to the classic rock & roll style of the late 60s and early 70s. Two of the premier bands that were part of the British new wave were The Psychedelic Furs & Squeeze. After over 40 years these two band still rock and the audience at tonight show really enjoyed them. The new wave style consisted on a rhythm section with a strong baseline and driving percussion that provides the heart pound rhythm for all of the songs.
If you grew up in the era when MTV actually played music videos, then you will be familiar with this style of music. If you get the chance to see both The Psychedelic Furs & Squeeze perform together, I would highly recommend it. They are entertaining and the music is just fun.
The Psychedelic Furs

The Psychedelic Furs are an English rock band founded in London in February 1977. Led by lead vocalist Richard Butler and his brother Tim Butler on bass guitar, the Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene and considered part of the new-wave rock movement. The current lineup consists of lead singer Richard Butler, bassist Tim Butler, drummer Zachary Alford, guitarist Rich Good, Keyboardist Amanda Kramer and saxophonist Mars Williams.
After Squeeze, The Psychedelic Furs had a lot to live up to. They did it and even more. Between lead singer Richard Butler and saxophonist Mars Williams, they extruded an energy that was infectious. From the very first song, the audience was on their feet and dancing along.

They started the show with “Into Like a Train” which is a fast-moving song got the audience rocking. They did not let up as they moved into “Mr. Jones”. Finally, they slowed it down a little with “Heaven”. The Psychedelic Furs are best known for their song “Pretty in Pink” which was the theme song for John Hughes classic 80s movie of the same name. Tonight’s performance was a mix of all of their classic songs from most of their albums. They ended the show with their hit, Heartbreak Beat”.

Squeeze

Squeeze was never a chart-topping band in the US. They did much better in England. However, they are a fan favorite when it comes to performing live. This is the first time I had seen Squeeze live and I have to say they were great. The energy they had on stage was infectious and the audience was standing most of the set.
They started the show with “Take Me I’m Yours” that has a strong bassline. One of my favorite songs was “What Have They Done?”. It is a pop song that just makes you want to get up and dance to it. After 18 songs and 80 plus minutes of energetic songs we were just getting started for the night.
You can see if Squeeze is coming to a city near you on their website or Facebook page.
