Tour: Shades of Sorrow over North America

The venue was the Nile Theater in Mesa Arizona.  But instead of the main floor, we were in the basement or as they call it, The Underground.  It is a small space and the stage is only about 1 foot high.  The fans are right up to the stage and at times we were pushed onto the stage when the crowd behind us moshed.  It also got extremely warm because there was very little airflow.  Also, the sold-out crowd generated a lot of heat.

We had 3 bands tonight.  First up was Kenopsia.  Next was Misanthropic.  Finally, we got the headliner and band we were there to see, Crypta.  After the concert was over, the members of Crypta came out into the audience and took photos with fans and signed merchandise.  I really love to see bands do this because it makes the band seem more real and the fans that get stuff signed or get photos with the band become life-long fans.  Also, please purchase items from the merchandise table.  This is the main way a lot of bands can continue to tour.

Crypta

I have been to Brasil a few times and I am amazed at the number of metal heads they have there.  A good friend of mine, her son went to see Iron Maiden in São Paulo.  I told him I had also just seen them and was up front at the fence.  He was shocked to hear that there were only about 12,000 people at the show.  He said that there were over 120,000 at the stadium in São Paulo.  So, the people of Brasil really do love metal music.  It is great to see that they are finally producing some amazing metal bands for the rest of the world to hear.

Crypta is a Brasilian death metal band formed in São Paulo in 2019.  The band consists of bassist-and lead singer Fernanda Lira, drummer Luana Dametto, lead guitarist Jéssica di Falchi and rhythm guitarist Tainá Bergamaschi.

This is the second time I have seen Crypta and the first time they headlined a tour.  These ladies can really put on a dynamic show.  Given the cramped stage, they still moved around and did a lot of headbanging.  They are also extremely talented musicians.  The 2 guitarists are very good and play off each other very well.  The drummer is a little stiff, but she does an excellent job.  The real show person of the group is the bass player and lead singer, Fernanda.  She is constantly making faces and growling at the audience.

They performed almost their entire new album, Shades of Sorrow.  But the real audience favorite seemed to be “From The Ashes”.  They sang along with Fernanda and at time she, pointed the mic at the audience to let them sing the chorus.

Personally, I couldn’t have asked for more.  They played all of the songs I wanted to hear and their stage performance was spectacular.  I personally can’t wait to see them again, only the next time I hope they are in a larger venue.  You can check out Crypta on their website and social media pages.

Misanthropic

Misanthropic at The Nile Theater Underground , Mesa, AZ on February 21st, 2024

After the first band, it was nice to finally be able to literally see this band.  Misanthropic is a local Death Metal band from Mesa, Arizona.  For a Death metal band they are OK.  They were much better then the first band.  The band consists of Logan Ryan on g and vocals, Blue Martinez on guitar, Alex Zucker on bass and drummer Xander Bridge.  I did enjoy the guitar playing of Blue.  He could really shred it.  You can check them out on their social media sites below.

Kenopsia

Kenopsia at The Nile Theater Underground , Mesa, AZ on February 21st, 2024

Kenopsia is a 4-piece band from Tucson.  I really can’t say much good about this band because the lead singer decided that he wanted to smoke us out.  He had a smoke machine back by the drummer and he had it generating so much smoke that at times I could not even see the person standing next to me, let alone the band members.  It was also so thick that a number of us started coughing and the person next to me finally put on a mask.  I was so overwhelmed by the smoke that I really didn’t listen to the music much let alone get many photos.  Hopefully the singer will learn to cut it out and rely on the music more.
