Puscifer is an American rock group formed in Los Angeles. This was the second stop on Puscifer’s North American tour this spring. It is to showcase their new album Normal Isn’t. Between the 2 sets, they performed the entire album. They also added a few songs from past albums to fill out the performance.
Puscifer is the creation of Maynard Keenan, lead singer of Tool and A perfect Circle. He was joined by singer Carina Round, guitarist Mat Mitchell, drummer Gunner Olsen and bass player Kosh Moreau.
This was a typical Maynard concert; there were no video or photos allowed (other then a few professional photographers for the first 2 songs). The tour manager makes sure that people don’t use their cell phones during the show. He told the staff at AZ Financial that they were to give 1 warning and then the next time the person would be escorted out of the venue. Maynard does this because he wants the fan to enjoy the show and not have to look through someone else’s cell phone. He is not alone in doing this, as many other big performers have the same policy. I personally think it is stupid when someone holds up a tablet and records a video of a song. It totally blocks the view of the people behind them. Hell, Robert Fripp of King Crimson was known to stop a performance and demand security remove anyone videoing or photographing during the show. So be warned if you are going to the show.
The show started with a short video. As smoke covered the stage, Mat, Gunner and Kosh came on stage and started to play. The lights were very low and red so you didn’t get a full concept of the stage until Maynard and Carina started singing. They were above the stage floor on a walk way behind and above the rest of the band. Maynard came out in his typical black outfit, face painting and very spiky hairdo. Carina was in this red dress that had huge shoulders. After the first song, they come down the stairs to the main stage. Maynard on one side and Carina on the other. Then they would walk across and pass each other as they went to the other side to sing. They did this a number of times.
Even if you could video or photograph the performance, it would have been extremely difficult. They used a lot of red lights, smoke covered the stage and they had flashing light behind the band and singers.
Overall, this was a very typical Maynard concert. Strong vocals, flashing lights and heavy rock music. If you like Puscifer’s music, you will love this show. It was nice that they did cover their entire new album, Normal Isn’t.
Opening the show was comedian Dave Hill. Dave came running out on stage like a madman dancing and hopping around like a crazy person. At one point he picked up a set of red num-chuks and dance with them for about 10 seconds (luckily didn’t hit himself). Later he picked up a guitar and started to play short snippets of songs for about 30 seconds. Finally, he settles down and started reading a list of things he would say at an interview at Dollar Tree.
I have seen a lot of comedians over the late 60 years. I can say that some of them have been extremely funny and some of them have had a very dry humor. Dave didn’t even get close to any of these. I saw his performance as just some kid acting out and looking stupid. Note: I love the 3 Stooges and the Keystone Cops. Some people thought he was funny by the comments on his Facebook page, but they must have seen a different show then me or their grasp of comedy is much different from mine. Personally, I didn’t get Dave.
