Tour: Ultimate Ultimate Greatest Hits Tour
It has been a strange concert week for me. I started out with a Metal show that had a rain delay, then a 90s rock concert, then an Arizona rock bands concert and finally a 70s art rock show. The first 3 shows were all outside in the hot and muggy Arizona summer. Luckily the last show was inside at one of my favorite venues, the Celebrity Theatre. The Celebrity Theatre is designed as a venue in the round with a rotating stage. But for tonight’s 10cc concert, they only utilized ½ of the venue and the stage didn’t rotate. If you have not been to the Celebrity Theatre, it is a great venue where every seat is within 100 feet of the stage. It also has a fantastic sound system.

The concert started with Danny Zelisko (the promoter) announcing future shows. Then Danny had Blu Parr come out with a signed guitar by the members of 10cc. Danny does this at almost every one of his shows at the Celebrity Theatre and all of the money goes to a local charity, St. Mary’s Food Bank. For each dollar collected, St. Mary’s provides 5 meals to the less fortunate in the valley. So, if you ever want a signed guitar by your favorite band, then make sure to bring your credit card.

Max Gomez was the opening act. He is a singer songwriter from Toas, New Mexico. His style is a mix of folk, country and southwestern Americana. Max is a personal friend of Danny Zelisko and Danny has Max open for a number of his shows. This is my 5th time to see Max and he keeps impressing me with each show. The one song I love that he does is “New Mexico”. It talks about his home state and the issues he had with TSA agent thinking he needed a passport because he wasn’t a US citizen. Max just released his latest album, Memory Mountain. Most of the shows in tonight’s performance was from this new album. Max also tells stories about how he came up with the song. His performance reminds me a lot of the old MTV show, Unplugged. If you get a chance to see Max Gomez, I would highly recommend it.

After a very short break and clearing of the stage of Max’s equipment we were ready for the headliner, 10cc. 10cc is an English art rock band that formed in the 70s. This was my first time to see them and I really had no idea what to expect. From the first song I was hooked. A friend made the analogy that 10cc was a combination of The Beatles and Monty Python. He was absolutely correct. The majority of their songs were a mixture of whimsical lyrics and great music. I am a huge Monty Python fan and loved their songs. A lot of 10cc songs reminded me of those Monty Python songs. I love it.
Their song selection covered a wide select from their albums. They played the 2 songs that were their biggest hits here in the US, “The Things We Do for Love” and “I’m Not in Love”. After each song they got a standing ovation. You can see the full setlist below.
After a short break, they came back for a 2-song encore. The first song, “Donna” they did in acapella. As they sang, they would bob up and down with one of then out of sequence. They then in Monty Python fashion, push his head down to get him in sync with the rest of them. The last song they did was “Rubber Bullets”.
If you want to have a fun night of whimsical music then I can highly recommend 10cc.
