Tour:  The Shins – Oh, Inverted World – The 21st Birthday Tour

It was interesting to cover this show.  I knew very little about The Shins and Joseph prior to the show.  I listen to their music via Amazon music to get an understanding of their style and sound.  For me it was strange that I was covering a set of Indie bands when I was also covering 2 Thrash Metal concerts on either side of it.  Personally, I enjoy a lot of different styles of music, but I normally draw the line at most country, rap, hip-hop and opera concerts.

The concert was at the Marquee Theatre and in the past few months the crowds have been so-so.  But tonight, the place was packed including the balcony.  It was also nice that there was no mosh pit or idiots pushing to try and move forward crushing those in the front.  I also did not have to worry about crowd surfers and getting hit in the head.  Instead, there were just a large number of fans that would jump during different songs.  Also, during a number of songs, the audience sang along.  It was very nice from my point of view that the stage and band were well lite and photography was easier.

Overall, I really enjoyed the show and both bands.  Would I go see them again, Hell Yes.  One lady I met in the crowd had come from New York to see The Shins.  Her enthusiasm was infectious.  From the crowds’ reactions, I could tell that they were all extremely happy to be seeing these two great groups.

The Shins

The Shins is an American indie rock band formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1996. The band is the project of singer-songwriter James Mercer, who has served as the band’s sole constant member throughout numerous line-up changes.  The current band consists of founder James Mercer as guitarist and lead singer, Yuuki Matthews on bass, Mark Watrous as guitarist, drummer Jon Sortland and Patti King on keyboards.

James Mercer is definitely the main person in the band, with each of the other members supporting him.  During the show, Joseph joined them on stage to provide backing vocals on a number of different songs.  Near the end of the show, both Patti and Mark picked up violins and performed one of the songs.

Overall, I was extremely impressed by The Shins and their music.  It was light and just fun to listen to.  By the end of the show, I became a huge fan and will definitely go see them again.  Every once in a while, I need to change things up and go to a show that is not Metal.  I enjoy variety and sometimes I just like to have the music flow over me and make me feel warm and happy.  The Shins definitely did this for me.  So, if you are looking for an evening of amazing musicians performing great songs that just make you feel good, then I would highly recommend seeing The Shins.

You can find more information about The Shins on either their website or Facebook page.  For those in the Albuquerque area, The Shins will be there on August 4th and Flagstaff people can see them on August 5thJoseph will also be there.  If you get a chance to see this incredible band, I would highly recommend it.

Joseph

Joseph at Marquee Theatre, Tempe, AZ on July 24th, 2022

Joseph is an American folk band from Portland, Oregon made up of three sisters: Natalie Closner Schepman, and twins Allison Closner and Meegan Closner. Their first album, Native Dreamer Kin, was self-released in early 2014.  They remind me a lot of the girl bands back in the 60s that did great harmonies.  They combine soft melodies with spectacular harmonies to create a memorizing sound that just make you feel good.  Natalie plays either acoustic or electric guitar to accompany them.  She also uses a stomp pad to add dimension and emphasis to the songs.  Meegan and Allison are extremely animated and use a number of different hand movement to help convey or emphasis means as they sing.  Sometimes they pulling their arms into their chests to convey deep emotion and other times its arm wide spread to convey joy and excitement.  You can tell that they are really enjoying the moment and it conveys to the crowd.

Check out Joseph on either their website or Facebook page.  They will be touring with The Shins through the middle of September.  You can catch them in either Albuquerque on August 4th or Flagstaff on August 5th.  Check out one of their upcoming shows and you will soon become a fan.
