The Neighbourhood appeared live at the Marquee Theater on February 3, 2016, for a sold out show. The band stopped in Tempe as part of the quick 5-show Caution: The Drought Tour 2016 with stops in Tucson, Tempe, Pomona and concluding with 2 shows in Santa Ana prior to heading to Europe for concert dates beginning February 24. All 5 of the Arizona and California were sold out in advance.
The Neighbourhood is touring in support of the 2015 release Wiped Out! The album is a hazy, melodic collection of songs with a groove that is a bit reminiscent of Glass Animals 2014 release ZABA. The album is both moody and heartfelt and the tracks were very well received by the fans at the show.
The pre-concert excitement within the Marquee was palpable. Concert goers in the back began pushing forward before The Neighbourhood even took the stage, requiring security to help some young concert goers over the barriers to escape the crush from behind. Once the show began, however, the crush seemed to subside as fans carved out their own little space to sway with the music. (review cont’d below gallery)

Jesse Rutherford is a perfect front-man – exuding plenty of charisma and completely owning the moment. Fans, many of them looking to be 16 and younger, clearly adore Rutherford and he plays off of that adoration exceptionally well. Rutherford’s voice matches the hazy groove of the band’s music perfectly. The band behind him was solid. Mikey Margott on bass and Brandon Abel Fried on drums kept the beat moving while Jeremy Freedman and Zach Abels layered trippy, moody guitars over it. But as good and well put together as the band may be, Rutherford out front stole the show.
The band also made use lighting in a way that most young bands haven’t mastered. The band employed lots of fog and bright lights to create a hazy, trippy vibe at the beginning of the show, giving way to strong, directional, frenetic lighting towards the end. The show made better use of lighting than any show I’ve seen a quite a while.
If you’re a fan of The Neighbourhood the band delivered exactly the show you were hoping for. New material mixed with their 2013 and 2014 established hits – all delivered by a quintessential rock front-man in Rutherford.
