Most of the time concerts at the Nile Theater consist of 3 or 4 bands.  But tonight’s show only had 2 bands on the bill, The 69 Eyes and Pretty Boy Floyd.  This was the first night of their tour for both bands.  However, you would never have believed it since they were at their best and put on one hell-of-a show.  Both bands were outstanding.  We did have a little wait outside while The 69 Eyes did there meet and greet which ran long, but luckily it was a mild night in Mesa.

THE 69 EYES

The 69 Eyes at The Nile Theater, Mesa, AZ on May 5th, 2023

“Widely known as the Helsinki Vampires, THE 69 EYES gained several platinum albums with Blessed Be and Paris Kills and not only reached #1 of the single and album charts in their home country of Finland, but also plunged the world into a sinful cosmos of love, death, and melancholy, while outliving any other band emerging from the goth hype of the early 2000s.” (from their website)

The 69 Eyes are a Gothic Rock (Goth Metal) band, but for me they were just a solid metal band, like from the early 80s but with a darker tone.  The audience were mostly Goth dressed people.  It was nice to see a band that I did not have to be concerned about a mosh pit.  THE 69 EYES currently consist of founder frontman and lead singer Jyrki 69, guitarists Bazie and Timo Timo, bass player Archzie and drummer Jussi 69.

Their latest album, Death of Darkness was just released this year.  Jyrki 69’s deep melodic voice brings a mood to the songs that encompasses the Gothic feel.  If you haven’t listened to the album, please check it out on one of the major streaming services.  Personally, I believe it is their best album.  Tonight, they performed 4 songs from the album including the title song of the album.  They mixed in songs from Devils, Angels and Paris Kills.

I had never heard of The 69 Eyes prior to the show.  But I am now a fan and will definitely go to more of their shows.  I really enjoy finding new bands (at least for me) that I have not heard before or seen.  It is nice to see bands like The 69 Eyes that are extremely good, but still not that well know and have smaller crowds.  I talked with a number of people that were at the meet and great with them and the fans indicated that the band was extremely friendly and even signed at number of items for them.

Pretty Boy Floyd

Pretty Boy Floyd at The Nile Theater, Mesa, AZ on May 5th, 2023

Pretty Boy Floyd, is 5-piece band for Hollywood, California.  Initially they were a Glam Metal band on the Sunset Strip in the late 80s with fellow hair bands, Skid Row, Warrant and Faster Pussycat.  Today I would place them into a more loud heavy metal band, but they call themselves, “Hollywood Sleaze Kings!“ (per Instagram site).
