No, Kansas did not perform at the Extra Innings Festival. This is in reference to the dust and windy condition on Saturday day 2 of the Extra Innings Festival at Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona. At one point during the day, they lowered the tower speakers on the side of Home Plate and tied them to the stage. During the wind gusts, Maggie Antone had her cowboy hat blown off multiple times. We (photographer) had to constantly clean our lens to get the dust off the lens. I even had dead grass blow into my lemonade. Luckly the wind died down at sunset. Otherwise, the weather was nice and in the 80s.

The day started with a fan favorite Wheelwright, a local Phoenix area band. As I mentioned before, by the time Maggie Antone hit the stage, the wind had picked up at Home Plate and she had her hat blown off multiple times and they crew had to tie down the side tower speakers. However, once the sun set, the winds died down and everything was perfect. It was interesting to get Grace Potter bounce around the stage, I had never heard of her before so I had no preconceived ideas of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised that she and her band were so good. But the real winner of the night was Kacey Musgraves and the light show she had. You will notice that I don’t have a lot of photos of her and the ones I have don’t show her with much frontal lighting. That was because they did not want to drown out the video light show behind her. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to photograph Kings of Leon, so I have no photos.

So how did the 2-weekend festival go, GREAT. The weather was in the 70s and low 80s which was perfect. When other parts of the country were in 30s & 40s or lower, we were basking in sunny warm weather. The wind was an issue for part of the event, but overall, it was better than rain or snow. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend any of the baseball events because I was going between stages, but from what I heard it went great.

For me the real standout performances were by Fall Out Boy, Beck, All-American Rejects, Evan Honer, Kacey Musgraves and Maren Morris. I was surprised by the performances by Grace Potter and Trampled By Turtles. I especially like to give a big shout out to local band, Good Boy Daisy. It was nice to see one of Alice Coopers Proof In The Pudding winners still together and doing well. I also have a soft spot for good local bands.

If you are in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area at the end of February and you want to see a great mixture of bands, then I would highly recommend going to the Innings and Extra Innings Festival. But like I stated before, I would have you opt for the VIP or Platinum package. I would like to commend C3 Presents, security and the staff for a outstanding job they did at the 4 day event. Everything went smoothly and I never noticed any major issues. Hopefully I will see you at next years festival and until then, I hope you get to see all of the bands that you love.
