Over the years I have been impressed by a number of guitarists, but one of the hardest working guitarists I have ever seen is Zakk Wylde. I have seen him perform with Pantera, Steve Vai’s Generation AXE, Experience Hendrix and his band, Black Label Society. This was the first time I saw him as part of one of his other bands, Zakk Sabbath.
I remember Zakk signing items for fans after the Experience Hendrix show here in Mesa. Someone said he must be extremely talented to be able to play with so many different bands. I remember Zakk replying, “No, it required a lot of hard work and practice”. I know a lot of other musicians that also claim that talent can only get you so far, but practice is what really counts.
For me the first 3 songs set the stage for the Black Label Society’s outstanding performance. They started with “Funeral Bell” then went into “Name in Blood” and then “Destroy & Conquer”.

We did get to see Zakk and the band perform their tribute to the great Ozzy Osbourne as their last song, “Ozzy’s Song”. I know it’s not in the setlist but I remember it because of the wonderful video that played in the background. It was a very moving tribute.

Black Label Society consists of Zakk Wilde as lead guitarist and singer, bass player John (JD) DeServio, drummer Jeff Fabb and rhythm guitarist Dario Lorina.
I know some people were disappointed that Black Label Society only played for about 75 minutes. But what you have to remember is that Zakk also played for about 1 hour just prior as part of Zakk Sabbath. So, in reality we got over 2 hours of music by Zakk. Personally, I was very happy with all of the performances.

Being a huge Sabbath fan, Zakk has put together a band called Zakk Sabbath and performs a lot of Black Sabbath songs. Granted he adds his own flavor to each song, but for the most part he stayed very faithful to the originals. For tonight’s show, Zakk dug into some of Black Sabbath’s deep cuts. The only real blockbuster song he played was “War Pigs”. Personally, I was hoping he would perform “Black Sabbath”, “Paranoid” or “Electric Funeral”. But we did get “Children of the Grave” and “N.I.B.”. Zakk did perform with Ozzy Osborne and was there for Ozzy’s last gig.

Opening the show was Dark Chapel. They are were formed by Black Label Society’s rhythm guitarist Dario Lorina. They blend sludgy grooves, melodic hooks, and bluesy riffs. Their debut album in 2024 was Spirit in the Glass.
Even though I have seen Zakk perform before, I always love seeing him again. He puts so much energy into each performance that it leaves you wonder how he can keep it up. The man is a machine. He has honed his skill to a fine knife edge. I personally can’t wait to see him again in whatever band he is part of. His performance is just mind-blowing. If you get a chance to see this tour, I VERY HIGHLY recommend it.
