One of the hots bands in the late 60s and 70s was Led Zeppelin. They had the classic line-up of lead singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bass player John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham. With the passing of John Bohman in September of 1980, Led Zeppelin broke-up. In May of 1988 Plant, Page and Jone reunited with John’s son Jason Bonham to perform an Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert.
Over the years Jason has performed with a number of different artists and bands. In 2009 Jason decided to put together what would become Josan Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening. Jason told us that he initially only thought it would be for 1 year. 16 years later they are still going strong.
Jason Bonham is currently joined by lead singer James Dylan, bassist Dorian Heartsong, Alex Howland on keyboards and rhythm guitar and lead guitarist Akio “Mr. Jimmy” Sakurai.
A lot of bands attempt to cover Led Zeppelin and some do better than other. However, if you want to see the absolutely best band doing Led Zeppelin, then Jason’s band is the one to see. Jason is masterful recreating John Bonham’s unique sound. And Mr. Jimmy not only sounds like Jimmy Page, but he also adds the physical movements that Page was famous for. James Dylan sounds extremely good, but no one can recreate the swagger and raw sex appeal of Robert Plant. John Paul Jones did both bass and keyboard. His role has been covered by two people, bass player Dorian Heartsong and keyboardist Alex Howland. Alex also provides some rhythm guitar.
The show began with “In the Light” as an intro. The band emerge on the stage and went into “Good Times Bad Times”.
Jason joked that the song “Houses of the Holy” was not on the album with the same name, but was later on Physical Graffiti. They also performed “Kashmir” which is one of the songs Plant and Page thinks was their best.
To understand just how amazing Jason is on drums, they performed one of the hardest drumming songs, “Achilles Last Stand”. I have never heard another tribute band ever attempt to cover this song. Jason did it masterfully. I saw John Bonham perform it in 1977 and Jason’s version was almost identical. Kudos for Jason performing this great song,
They ended there almost 2 hours set with “Whole Lotta Love” and “Rock and Roll”. Everyone was standing for the entire show.
So many great songs performed by truly great musicians. I saw Led Zeppelin twice and I can honestly say Jason’s band does them proud. If there is one band so see that performs Led Zeppelin songs, then Jason’s band is the one to see.
Some people grumbled after the show because they didn’t hear “Stairway To Heaven”. But personally, with so many songs to choose from the massive Led Zeppelin’s catalog, there would be some songs omitted that people would want to hear. You can see the full list of the songs performed below.
