Tedeschi Trucks Band

On Friday September 2nd, Tedeschi Trucks Band (TTB) came to the pool at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale Arizona.  The band is fronted by husband and wife team, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi.  Before Derek and Susan created their band in 2010, Derek played guitar for The Allman Brothers Band.  Once you hear Derek’s slide guitar licks, you can definitely hear Duane Allman’s influence.  Susan is also an outstanding musician and has 5 Grammy nominations.  She plays both guitar and is the lead singer for the band.  Derek Trucks has won 2 Grammys, one for the Derek Trucks Band album Already Free in 2010 and another with Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s debut album Revelator in 2012.  TTB’s music style is a mixture of southern rock, blues and jazz fusion.  With Derek’s soulful lead guitar and Susan’s fantastic voice, you can easily see why they are Grammy winners.  TTB originally started out as 8 members, but now has grown to 12 members.  The current members are: Derek Trucks (Lead Guitar), Susan Tedeschi (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Tim Lefebvre (Bass), Kofi Burbridge (Keyboards, Flute), Tyler Greenwell (Drums), J.J. Johnson (Drums), Mike Mattison (Vocals), Mark Rivers (Vocals), Alecia Chakour (Vocals), Kebbi Williams (Saxophone), Ephraim Owens (Trumpet), and Elizabeth Lea (Trombone).

The concert started at 8:20 and ran for almost 2 hours.  I was extremely happy to hear both Laugh About It and I want More both from their latest album Let Me Get By released just this year and both were even better live.  During Get Out Of My Life, Woman, Mike Mattison came out front to take on the lead vocals.  Both Derek and Kofi jammed during Let Me Get By.  The main set ended with Idle Wind where Derek did a solo and later both drummers, JJ and Tyler did a dual drum solo.  It reminded me of when I saw The Allman Brothers Band back in the 70s.  After a short break, they came back and played the Ray Charles song Lets Go Get Stoned.  The entire audience was standing, dancing and singing along. This was a perfect way to end a concert and the fans loved it.  If you get the opportunity to see TTB, go for it.

This was my first concert at Talking Stick Resort’s pool.  They close off the entire pool area and setup the stage in the area just to the side of the pools.  For this show, they had seats setup in the area between the pool and the stage.  Around the pool they had a general standing area.  They also had a number of VIP seating sections to the right and left of the main seating area.  Overall the viewing was very good.  I was in the middle of the seats in row L and had no problems seeing the band.  The sound was also very good and I detected no echo or bounce back from the hotel.  If you get a chance to see a concert at the pool, go for it.  I can’t wait to see my next show there at the end of September.
