Tour: Cruelty and the Beast Tour 2021

It’s a Wednesday night, prior to Halloween, but you couldn’t tell that from the fans and bands at the Marquee Theatre.  They were all-in full-face make-up like images out of horror movies.  At the last-minute tonight’s band line-up had to change.  It seems that there were break-through cases of Covid-19 for both Once Human and 3Teeth that were detected a week earlier.  Out of an abundance of caution, they were replaced by local Phoenix area bands.  It was a real disappointment because I really wanted to see Lauren Hart (saw her with Kamelot in 2019) in her new band Once Human.  I also wanted to see 3Teeth.  But the show had to go on and the local bands they got were a good compliment to Cradle of Filth.

Cradle Of Filth

Cradle Of Filth at the Marquee Theatre on 20th October 2021

Cradle Of Filth is a black metal band out of Suffolk, England lead by front man Dani Filth.  They formed in 1991 but released their first album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh in 1994.  Over the years the band’s line-up has changed except for Dani.  For this tour Cradle of Filth consists of founding member and lead singer Dani Filth, guitarists Richard Shaw and Marek ‘Ashok’ Šmerda, bass player Daniel Firth, drummer Martin ‘Marthus’ Škaroupka and Anabelle Iratni on keyboards and providing backing vocals.  This tour was a celebration of their 3rd album Cruelty and the Beast.  They played the entire album as their main set.

After performing Cruelty and the Beast they came back for a 5 song second set or encore.  They started with a cover of the Iron Maiden classic, “Hallowed Be Thy Name”.  Then as a special treat, they performed two new songs, “Crawling King Chaos” and “Necromantic Fantasies” from their upcoming album Existence Is Futile.

In the middle of the stage was a raised platform with a skeleton in chainmail on the mic stand.  This is where Dani would come to tower over and sing to the audience and provide his ear-piecing screams.  The guitar players were constantly running around on the stage and Richard was always enticing the mosh pit people to amp it up.  One thing that Cradle of Filth is known for is the make-up the band member’s wear.  Tonight, Dani, Richard and Marek were in full face make-up.  When they came back after the short break between sets, Anabelle had a red rose that she presented to Dani.  Dani took the rose and in a true metal act, bit off the pedals and blow them around the stage.

The only thing (as a photographer) that was a pain was the right side of the stage was constantly in a fog/smoke screen.  The smoke generator was on that side.  It was so smokey that I could not get a good photograph of Anabelle because she was at the back of the stage on that side.  On the left side of the stage in the back was Martin surrounded by his drumkit and behind a plexiglass barrier.  This plexiglass made it also hard to get a good photo of Martin.  They had a very good light show, but as always, I would have loved more frontal lighting.  For almost all of the songs, the band members would start out at the back of the stage with their backs to the audience.  As the song started, they would turn and move to the front of the stage.  However, Dani would many times stand in the back in the smoke and red lights and not be seeable by the audience.

The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance.  From the start they were shouting and throwing up “the horns”.  After completing Cruelty and the Beast they came back out to a tremendous roar and cheering from the audience.  When they sang “Hallowed Be Thy Name” the audience sang along and at times were loader than the band.

It was great to see that at tonight’s show there was a mosh pit, but this time it was relegated to one side of the venue.  This allowed the fans to take over 2/3rds of the floor for just watching the show without getting slammed and it allowed the people in the mosh pit to also have a good time.

New can find out more about upcoming tour dates and their new album, Existence Is Futile on either their website of Facebook page.

Unholy Strength is a Melodic Black Metal band from Phoenix, Arizona.  It is led by lead guitarist Jordan Finn, front man and lead signer Solomon Bobinac, rhythm guitarist Darian Rosales, bass player Kevin Pfeiffer and drummer Cameron Knouse.  I don’t have a lot of information about the band.  But from their performance they are an Extreme Brutal Black Metal band with lyrics that don’t hold back.  All of the songs from tonight’s performance are from their debut album, Tomes of Heaven Apocalypse that was released on September 3rd of this year.  You can listen to their album on many of the popular streaming services.

Savage Necromancy

Savage Necromancy at the Marquee Theatre on 20th October 2021

Savage Necromancy is a Death/Black Metal band from Phoenix, Arizona band.  Their songs encompasses images of war, blasphemy, desecration and death.  Just from the band members names you can get a good idea of the music they played.  The band consists of lead singer “Diabolical Fuckwitch of the Black Flame – Odius War Chants & Chthonic Incantations”, guitarist “Conjurer of Putrid Desecrations – Unholy Axe Beheadings & Demonic Arch-Fiend Summonings”, bass player “Black Knight of the Infernal Draconic Order – Subterranean Damnations & Sardonic Executioner of the Hellward Realms” and drummer “Grand Marshall of Hell – Ceremonial Conjurer of Seminc Rhythms & Thunderous Primitivity”.

They were the first band at tonight’s show and when they come on stage I through I was in Rob Zombie movie.  Covered in black outfits, metal spikes and full-face make-up, they made a very strong impression.  Then came their songs and I was just blown away.  They went to places that I have not heard before.  This band is not for your parents, the moral minority or the far-right morons.  It will definitely have a following among the death metal fans.
