Have you ever had that 1 illusive band that you always wanted to see, but for some reason you never got the chance. For me that was Buckcherry. For the past 15 years I have attempted to review and photograph them, but for some reason, the stars never lined up correctly, until this year. I have a good friend that is a guitar tech for a number of bands and this fall he is touring with Buckcherry here in the US. So, I reached out to him to see if he could connect me with the tour manager. Well, it worked.
For this tour the band consists of lead singer and frontman Josh Todd, Guitarists Stevie D. and Billy Rowe, with bassist Kelly Lemieux and drummer Francis Ruiz.
I had always heard that Josh Todd was a very dynamic singer and showman. That doesn’t even come close to his performance, it was outstanding. He reminded me of a young Mick Jaguar with the way he roamed the stage, facial expressions and the way he controlled the audience. At the end of the show, he took his shirt off and we all got to see his tattoos.
I thought it was interesting that both guitarists, Billy Rowe and Stevie D. exchanged playing lead and rhythm. Both were exceptional and really powered the music to new heights. But what made the music really impressive was the heart pounding sound from Francis and the powerful baseline by Kelly. In all it was very well balanced and did not overpower Todd’s singing.
This tour is to help promote their latest album, Roar Like Thunder just release this summer. The other songs were a mix from all of their prior albums. I really enjoyed their performance (and the audience’s) of “Say Fuck It”.
So, after waiting 15 years, was it worth it? HELL YES. It was a fantastic show. It was only about 80 minutes long, but in those 80 minutes you got an amazing performance. However, be aware that there is some language that might upset prudes. If you ever get the chance to see Buckcherry, I very highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. Personally, I can’t wait to see them again.
First up tonight was local Phoenix area favorite, Stereo Rex. They are just a straight on hard rock band. If you get a chance to see them perform around the valley, I would highly recommend it. I really enjoy their music and they are very good.
Next up was Drew Cagle & The Reputation. Drew Cagle & The Reputation is a High Energy, No Apologies, National Touring Rock Band from Central Illinois. I was very impressed by them. They were very energetic, especially their lead singer, Drew Cagle.
Nashville Pussy was a last-minute substitute for Michael Monroe due to medical issues. Nashville Pussy is an American rock band from Atlanta, Georgia. The band’s lyrical themes mostly revolve around sex, drugs, drinking, fighting, and rock ‘n’ roll. Just look at setlist below. This was probably my least favorite band tonight. They were ok, but there was just something that turned me off. Especially later in their set when they spit whiskey on the fans. Luckily, I was off to the side of the stage and did not get hit.
